Luke Brown: Life Goals

Length: 5-10 minutes
Format: HD Digital with Canon 600D
             Stereo Sound

Synopsis: A short documentary based on a young man named Luke Brown, who is currently playing football for Histon FC full-time and has ambitions. His ambitions are to become a professional football player and have a long career in the game as possible. It'll show his journey so far and what is to come in the future for him. I'll based it mainly at his home with interviews and some cut aways of his personal stuff to give a representation of him, i could use his trophies to show his achievements, this'll give the audience a good insight of him. Some taken at Histon FC ground as this is who he plays for, it helps give a good representation of his football career. It'll be an interview-based documentary, so you get the information directly from him.

Key features to be highlighted in the documentary:

  • Journey so far
  • Playing for Histon
  • Achievements
  • Future Goals
  • Travelling
  • His mum's opinion

Themes & Concept: The theme is sport and ambitions as it is about Luke's journey so far in football. Its about his ambitions and what his aspirations are for the future and how he's going to achieve these. This is the career that Luke wants to get into, so it's a case of how he's going to do it and the risks he's going to take to try and achieve this. Considering he is going to America to help his portfolio in football, it'll show his mums opinion and how she feels about him going, potentially being emotional. it mainly shows what he's willing to do just to fulfil his dream and he has a huge passion for football.

Target Audience: The target audience is football fans of similar age to Luke (18) who are in the same position. Both male and females who want to have a long career in football and have a dream similar to Luke, it'll help with inspiration and gibe them a feeling of what steps you could potentially take to achieve the dream. A similar documentary is Trying to Make It (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__HxO2j3c2A) which is about Emmanuel Oyeleke and whether he will make it professional or not, this is similar to Luke as it's a case of it needing to be continued for whether or not he made it or not. It will be put onto youtube for the public to watch for inspiration and potentially to film festivals as well.

Rough Cut & Peer Feedback (Unit 41)

Rough Cut

Feedback
  • Interviews with his mum are too long, need to be shorter as audience will get bored.
  • Needs more cutaways to fill the interviews as there is too much of Luke - Also need to be relevant to what is being spoke about.
  • Could do with montages of him playing football, with a soundtrack behind it, to break up the interviews.
  • Images of his dad would be useful, show the audience who it is he is talking about/looking up too.
  • Runs really smoothly.

BBFC Research (Unit 41)

BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification (originally called British Board of Film censors), which is a non-governmental body that classifies cinema films before their release. It was set up in 1912 by the film industry as they would much rather manage their own classification rather than the national/government do it. They have a specific requirement for when they classify videos, DVDs and to a minor extent some video games under the Videos Recordings Act 2010. Its legal basis was the cinematography act 1909 which meant cinemas had to have licenses from local authorities. Its name changed in 1984, from British boards of Film Censors to British Board of Film Classification because at that time it was given the responsibility for classifying videos to hire or purchase to view in the home as well as ones shown in the cinema. As well as the classifications plays a bigger part in the boards work than censorship. In 1986 BBFC was given its first computer game to certify, which was Dracula and was given the certificated of 15. Jack the Ripper was the first game to be certified as an 18, this was in 1987.

The BBFC is a non-profitable organisation, the fee's they have only accommodate to cover its cost. It doesn't receive subsidies from the government nor the film industry, this is to ensure they keep their independence. The BFFC's income comes only from the amount they charge for its services, they calculated this by measuring the running time of films submitted for classification. They will consult the Department of Culture, Media and Sport before they make any short of changes to the fees.

U  - Universal, meaning it is suitable for all ages.

PG - Parental Guidance, suitable for all ages however some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. It could contain mild sex/drugs reference or violence so parents should check before they allow their children to watch.

12A- 12A, This is only used in cinema. It means it is considered to be unsuitable for very young children. Children under the age of 12 are allowed to see the film is accompanied by an adult who must be over the age of 18. These films often include soft drugs, discrimination, strong language, moderate violence, nudity, sexual references.

12- 12, This means the film is suitable for children aged 12 years and over and not to be seen by another below the age. It includes the same guidelines as 12A certificate. It is illegal for anyone to rent or sell a 12-rated film etc. to anyone underage.

15- 15, Not suitable to anyone below the age of 15 years. It is illegal for anyone to sell/rent a film or supply a cinema ticket for a film etc. to anyone under the age. These films tend to contain hard drugs, foul language, strong violence, sex reference, nudity but not graphic. Sexual activity can be portrayed but not with strong detail as well as sexual violence may be shown but is discreet and justified by context.

1818, Films with this rating are suitable for only 18 year olds and over. It is illegal for anyone to sell/rent a film etc. or cinema ticket to anyone under the age. These films have no limitation to foul language used, hard drugs are allowed, explicit sex reference with detail, scene ors strong real sex may be permitted. Strong, gory violence and sexual violence is permitted unless it excessively graphic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_British_film_certificates - This shows the changes in the classifications over time.

Coraline

In the guidelines for BBFC it states that the PG classifications could contains some scary moments and Coraline has a 'general air' of eeriness and spookiness. They allow some elements of 'horror' but it must meet the criteria, the frightening sequences can't be intense, which in Coraline they aren't. The film includes elements which reduce the intensity of the supposedly frightening scenes as they contain a bit of comedy and silly songs and dancing. The examiner didn't feel like U was suitable as they had elements which scares come from people/places that children should feel safe too i.e. homes and parents. Coraline is in the fantasy film category which fits the child audience as of the fairy tales.

Post Production Techniques (Audio) (Unit 41)

This screenshot from my Premiere Pro timeline shows a montage of clips of Luke playing football. Below is the dialogue audio and then the music soundtrack. What i did with these clips was I overlapped the music with the audio, this is to make it blend better, I made the audio start out quiet as the dialogue was being spoken then increased the volume when the montage begun.

Post Production techniques (Video) (Unit 41)

 Before

After

I created this lighting effect on the interview shots by using an effects filter in Premiere Pro. The reason I used this was because i felt the image was a bit flat so the filter gave it a bit of depth. It gives more of a focus on Luke with the lighting over him and darkness on the rest. The top left corner firstly was a bit bright and over powering, to change this I had to reduce the intensity.

Narrative Structure (Unit 11)

The difference between a Story and a Narrative is that a story is the events that occur and a narrative is the way the events are portrayed. So you will most likely have one story to tell (story) however there are many ways you can tell the story(narrative). A Story includes a beginning, middle and end.

3 Act Narrative Structure
  1. Equilibrium - Everything is as it should be, in a state of equal balance.
  2. Disequilibrium - That order is disrupted by a key event. There is then a recognition of which the disorder has occurred.
  3. New Equilibrium - There's an attempt of repairing the damage of the disruption. There is then a return/restoration of a new equilibrium at the end of the narrative.

Classic Hollywood Narrative Structure [Linear]
  1. Exposition - Establishing Characters and key locations
  2. Development - Get to know more about characters
  3. Complication - Key event happens
  4. Climax - Problem gets solved
  5. Resolution - Happy Ending

Linear and Non-Linear

A linear narrative 'follows a straight line' meaning it starts at the beginning, then goes to the middle and then the ending, it's in a chronological order. However a  Non-Linear narrative will start with the middle of the story, so the issue of it, it'll then go back to the beginning, including 'flashbacks'. It's in a non-chronological order. An example of a Non-linear film is Pulp Fiction by Tarantino in 1995 and for an example of a Linear narrative film is Step Brothers by Adam McKay (2008).

Narrative Structure of Pulp Fiction

A diagram to show the order the film is shown

Breakdown of Pulp Fiction in 5 Act Structure

Pulp fiction is made up of 3 different stories which can be broken down into the 5 act structure, and throughout the film they overlap slightly.

6 Documentary Ideas (Unit 11)

  • A story from your local paper
Oscar Pistorius murder case - Pistorius shot his girlfriend on valentines day, but claims he thought it was an intruder. Been cleared of murder charges.
If this was what I'd do is do investigation into the story, as in record what has happened and use archive. I would also include interviews asking peoples opinions on the verdict.
Deborah Steel murder case (Ely) - missing for 17 years, digs up Longfields garden for investigation. Was a landlady at Royal Standard pub in Ely.
If i were to do this, I'd do it in a similar way to the Oscar Pistorius, where i'd use archive and explain the story, including a view of the house they think it was at as it's near me. I'd include interview of people in the area on their opinion.
  • A person you know
'A day in the life of a friend or family member'  - Documentary on an average day for a friend or family member on what they do, college/work etc.
The person I would do this on is an aspiring artist called Kieran Alleyne, he is currently acting on a CBBC show and he also produces music for fans, putting it on Youtube and Sound cloud and promotes it. I could do it on a key day where he's busy making music and make it a day in a life of what he loves doing, or go to key events that he'd taking part in and filming them and piecing them together to show what he does, it could be a good way of promoting him.
  • Investigation into something you're interested in
Football - My football experiences from the past and people I know who play. I could do this on my football history and who i played for and the experiences i had, including lots of archive. Either that or i could do it on a friend who plays football full time and how he finds it and what he gets up to and what his dreams are.
  • A place
Ely - History of Ely, what is there and what people think of it. I could show all historic places in Ely, including what it is and history of it, Including the Cathedral, Oliver Cromwell's House etc. showing tours of them.
  • An Issue
Social Networking - How everyone is know on social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter) and how it makes cyberbullying become bigger.
This could be done by doing lots of research about Facebook and Twitter, speaking about what you can do on them and how they came about etc. I then could investigate on cyber bullying, potentially finding someone who has been cyber bullied and what happened and what they did to stop it.
  • Autobiographical
Myself - day in a life.
I would do this by picking a day where I am busy with normal day to day things including, going to college, work and the gym. Just to show what I usually do on a average day and how busy it can be, this I would need help filming as it would be very difficult to produce and film myself.

Feature Length Documentary - Super Size Me (Unit 11)

Super Size Me is an American documentary by Morgan Spurlock which was aired in cinemas on May 7th 2004. It follows 30 days of Spurlock (February 1st to March 2nd 2003) just eating McDonalds food. His aim was to eat at a McDonalds three times in a day and he had to eat at least every item on the menu at least once. The documentary shows the effect McDonalds gives on his physical and psychological well being. He experienced mood swings, sexual dysfunction and fat accumulation on his liver as a result of this. It then took him 14 months to lose the weight he gained which was 24 and a half lbs after eating 5000 kcal a day.

The reason for his investigation was because of the increasing speed of obesity throughout the USA.

Genre: Documentary
Directed/Produced/Written by: Morgan Spurlock
Production Company: The Con
Agency: The result and effect of eating McDonalds every day.
Interviews: Talking Heads/Speaking to people on streets
Narrative: Morgan Spurlock
Sounds: Narration throughout film and continuous music.

I found the documentary entertaining but also a bit disturbing, this because it gives you an insight of the effects of eating junk food on a regular occasion and I like how it's a sort of life lesson for people who are eating a lot of unhealthy food.

TV Documentary - Skint (Unit 11)

Skint is a TV documentary series which is based on the lives of families from Scunthorpe who are unemployed and have next to no money as they just live off benefits. It shows issues such as crime, welfare dependency, truancy and addictions.
Filmed over a period of 9 months.

Genre: Documentary
Agency: The area the families live in and who they are
Sounds: Ambient and Narrative
Interviews: Talking heads
Narrative: Ralph Ineson
Producers: Rachel Millar and Gordon Wilson
Director: Holly Chalinor
Cinematography: Clips of the families day to day lives, what happens and what they do

I found the documentary relatively interesting as you get an insight of these peoples lives living with no money and how they get by. However, as its a series, it is not something i would watch the rest of the episodes of because I found it a bit boring as it was all based on the same kind of thing.
