Narrative Structure (Unit 11)
The difference between a Story and a Narrative is that a story is the events that occur and a narrative is the way the events are portrayed. So you will most likely have one story to tell (story) however there are many ways you can tell the story(narrative). A Story includes a beginning, middle and end.
3 Act Narrative Structure
Linear and Non-Linear
A linear narrative 'follows a straight line' meaning it starts at the beginning, then goes to the middle and then the ending, it's in a chronological order. However a Non-Linear narrative will start with the middle of the story, so the issue of it, it'll then go back to the beginning, including 'flashbacks'. It's in a non-chronological order. An example of a Non-linear film is Pulp Fiction by Tarantino in 1995 and for an example of a Linear narrative film is Step Brothers by Adam McKay (2008).

Breakdown of Pulp Fiction in 5 Act Structure
Pulp fiction is made up of 3 different stories which can be broken down into the 5 act structure, and throughout the film they overlap slightly.
3 Act Narrative Structure
- Equilibrium - Everything is as it should be, in a state of equal balance.
- Disequilibrium - That order is disrupted by a key event. There is then a recognition of which the disorder has occurred.
- New Equilibrium - There's an attempt of repairing the damage of the disruption. There is then a return/restoration of a new equilibrium at the end of the narrative.
Classic Hollywood Narrative Structure [Linear]
- Exposition - Establishing Characters and key locations
- Development - Get to know more about characters
- Complication - Key event happens
- Climax - Problem gets solved
- Resolution - Happy Ending

6 Documentary Ideas (Unit 11)
- A story from your local paper
Oscar Pistorius murder case - Pistorius shot his girlfriend on valentines day, but claims he thought it was an intruder. Been cleared of murder charges.
If this was what I'd do is do investigation into the story, as in record what has happened and use archive. I would also include interviews asking peoples opinions on the verdict.

Deborah Steel murder case (Ely) - missing for 17 years, digs up Longfields garden for investigation. Was a landlady at Royal Standard pub in Ely.
If i were to do this, I'd do it in a similar way to the Oscar Pistorius, where i'd use archive and explain the story, including a view of the house they think it was at as it's near me. I'd include interview of people in the area on their opinion.

- A person you know
'A day in the life of a friend or family member' - Documentary on an average day for a friend or family member on what they do, college/work etc.
The person I would do this on is an aspiring artist called Kieran Alleyne, he is currently acting on a CBBC show and he also produces music for fans, putting it on Youtube and Sound cloud and promotes it. I could do it on a key day where he's busy making music and make it a day in a life of what he loves doing, or go to key events that he'd taking part in and filming them and piecing them together to show what he does, it could be a good way of promoting him.

- Investigation into something you're interested in
Football - My football experiences from the past and people I know who play. I could do this on my football history and who i played for and the experiences i had, including lots of archive. Either that or i could do it on a friend who plays football full time and how he finds it and what he gets up to and what his dreams are.
- A place
Ely - History of Ely, what is there and what people think of it. I could show all historic places in Ely, including what it is and history of it, Including the Cathedral, Oliver Cromwell's House etc. showing tours of them.
- An Issue
Social Networking - How everyone is know on social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter) and how it makes cyberbullying become bigger.
This could be done by doing lots of research about Facebook and Twitter, speaking about what you can do on them and how they came about etc. I then could investigate on cyber bullying, potentially finding someone who has been cyber bullied and what happened and what they did to stop it.

- Autobiographical
Myself - day in a life.
I would do this by picking a day where I am busy with normal day to day things including, going to college, work and the gym. Just to show what I usually do on a average day and how busy it can be, this I would need help filming as it would be very difficult to produce and film myself.

Feature Length Documentary - Super Size Me (Unit 11)
Super Size Me is an American documentary by Morgan Spurlock which was aired in cinemas on May 7th 2004. It follows 30 days of Spurlock (February 1st to March 2nd 2003) just eating McDonalds food. His aim was to eat at a McDonalds three times in a day and he had to eat at least every item on the menu at least once. The documentary shows the effect McDonalds gives on his physical and psychological well being. He experienced mood swings, sexual dysfunction and fat accumulation on his liver as a result of this. It then took him 14 months to lose the weight he gained which was 24 and a half lbs after eating 5000 kcal a day.
The reason for his investigation was because of the increasing speed of obesity throughout the USA.
Genre: Documentary
Directed/Produced/Written by: Morgan Spurlock
Production Company: The Con
Agency: The result and effect of eating McDonalds every day.
Interviews: Talking Heads/Speaking to people on streets
Narrative: Morgan Spurlock
Sounds: Narration throughout film and continuous music.
I found the documentary entertaining but also a bit disturbing, this because it gives you an insight of the effects of eating junk food on a regular occasion and I like how it's a sort of life lesson for people who are eating a lot of unhealthy food.

TV Documentary - Skint (Unit 11)
Skint is a TV documentary series which is based on the lives of families from Scunthorpe who are unemployed and have next to no money as they just live off benefits. It shows issues such as crime, welfare dependency, truancy and addictions.
Filmed over a period of 9 months.
Genre: Documentary
Agency: The area the families live in and who they are
Sounds: Ambient and Narrative
Interviews: Talking heads
Narrative: Ralph Ineson
Producers: Rachel Millar and Gordon Wilson
Director: Holly Chalinor
Cinematography: Clips of the families day to day lives, what happens and what they do
I found the documentary relatively interesting as you get an insight of these peoples lives living with no money and how they get by. However, as its a series, it is not something i would watch the rest of the episodes of because I found it a bit boring as it was all based on the same kind of thing.
